New York trio QUARTERBACKS play a well-honed brand of "twee punk" - quick and spare instrumentation (guitar, drums, and bass) accompanied by straightforward vocals that remind me vaguely of very early Weezer material. The intersection of musical genres that QUARTERBACKS represents is interesting; while the songs are fast and short, the lyrics are exceptionally sweet, clever, and loving. Their album, Loveseat, opens with "Point Nine", a track that has a beautiful intro and exemplifies the rest of the album's DIY feel (it was recorded in one of the bandmate's bedroom and bathroom). Be sure to pick up a copy of the (blue!) cassette if you like; it's out now on Miscreant Records and the packaging looks beautiful.
